PORT OF KOLDING IN DENMARK
Kolding port in Denmark handles a variety of goods using a trimodal model – goods are being transported to the port by ships, trains and trucks. Based on one successful experience of Mantsinen machine already, Kolding port has ordered their second Mantsinen for next year 2022.
Dual Strategy with Mantsinen 140 Dualpower
“In 2019, we bought our first crane from Mantsinen Group, a 140 Hybrilift. We soon realized that it is very efficient and fast for all kinds of bulk material and recycling materials. We call her Sofia”, reveals Anders Vangsbjerg Sørensen, CEO of Kolding port.
Due to Kolding port’s proximity with the Kolding city, the port has set out strict goals for reducing noise levels. Kolding port is also aiming for a carbon neutral operation in 2030.
“When we were looking into purchasing a new material handling machine, our number one criteria was that it had to run on electricity. Three suppliers wanted to participate in our tender, but only Mantsinen was able to deliver what we wanted: a dual power machine. Mantsinen 140 Dualpower fits perfectly with our dual strategy: as little noise as possible and as little carbon emissions as possible. All the electricity we buy is wind power, and we have our own solar panels in the port that will soon cover about 50% of our energy consumption”, continues Sørensen.

Good communication is key
Great material handling machines are not always enough – open dialogue and good customer service releases the entire potential of collaboration.
“We have had help from Mantsinen every time we have needed it. Our contacts answer our calls and emails very quickly and I have the feeling that they will do anything they can to help us. When we bought our first machine in 2019, we also visited Joensuu to see the Mantsinen factory and met with Mantsinen staff. It was a great trip”, says Johnny Sørensen, COO of Kolding port.
The service organization for Kolding port was a joint effort; Mantsinen teamed up with a local partner in Denmark to ensure the service structure the client was hoping for.
Increasing performance and comfort
The first Mantsinen machine, Sofia, is proving to be a very efficient and popular crane in Kolding.
“The performance is very good, about 20-25% faster with 45% less fuel consumption. In scrap handling, before Sofia we had a wire rope crane and compared to that, Sofia is twice as efficient”. Our efficiency is also monitored by using Mantsinen Insight. We use it to check air intake, temperature levels, oil level and to track our idle time. It also informs us about any maintenance or service needs the machine has and is very useful”, tells Johnny Sørensen.
“Crane operators are very particular about their work tools. Sofia is by far the most popular crane we have here at the port. The operators “fight” over who gets to use it. The cabin, ergonomics, air conditioning – everything is perfect for them. Potential clients for Mantsinen are welcome to come to Kolding and see for themselves!” Anders Vangsbjerg Sørensen praises.
