RIWALD RECYCLING BEVERWIJK IN THE NETHERLANDS

Handling around 400,000 tons of waste materials annually requires high-performing yet easy-to-use machinery, and the Mantsinen 140 has exceeded expectations at the Beverwijk site.

Riwald Recycling’s scrap metal yard in Beverwijk has been relying on a Mantsinen 140 since January 2024. The 180-ton material handling machine is mounted on wheels, making it uniquely agile and efficient for rapid scrap metal handling preparing the scrap for loading and unloading 1,000 – 9,000-ton sea vessels. Jack Bellers, a machine operator at Riwald Recycling Beverwijk explains:

– Before this, we used to work on crawler cranes. They are stable too, but a bit less maneuverable. This one, with its two steering axles, front and back, can be positioned in difficult places with little effort. It has four large stabilizers and an extra axle in the middle to give added stability.

Riwald Recycling’s scrap yards sort out various materials from electrical household equipment to industrial residual flows to complete trains and airplanes. The versatility of Mantsinen 140 is a real advantage, as it enables material handling of all sorts from preparing and separating to sorting and loading.

– It is a good bulk machine, but also a machine I can do more precise work with, so to speak. We sift out incinerated waste here as well and I can do that with the Mantsinen too. It offers good visibility and great reach. I can keep an eye on all the conveyor belts. And I can do that comfortably all by myself. I find that to be very enjoyable and safe, Bellers explains.

To be honest, in the last 30 years of working with machines, this is by far the nicest machine I’ve worked with. Yes, that’s for sure!

A smooth ride right from the start 

When the need for a new crane presented itself, there was a peak in demand, and very few cranes available on the market. Riwald first purchased an older machine of another brand, but it brought along a lot of problems and eventually ended up stalling operations. Bellers made a list of requirements in terms of general capacity, reach, and lifting capacity, and management took care of the procurement. Deployment was smooth and quick.

– The machine is actually very easy to operate. You get two days of instruction in operation, functions, etc. But, given my 30 years of experience, I quickly caught on, Bellers confirms.

As the machine was originally intended to be rented, it had some additional features that further improved usability. For example, the walkway around the pylon makes performing maintenance work independently much easier.

Improving cycle times by up to 30%

Robert Koster, the manager of Riwald Recycling Beverwijk credits the Mantsinen 140 for improving storage capacity, handling capacity, and speed with an unloading capacity of approximately 300 to 500 tons per hour.  Since the switch to Mantsinen, cycle times have improved by 20–30 %. Capacity, power, and usability are top-notch, and the high-moving cabin and integrated camera system ensure constant high visibility, allowing work to progress smoothly and safely without interruptions. 

I gave the salesperson a 10 out of 10 for it. A ten is usually impossible, but, compared to anything else I’ve ever operated, it’s a ten for me!
